The HJFMRI team develops partnerships, infrastructure and expertise around the world to help researchers understand, prevent and treat infectious diseases and respond rapidly to emerging outbreaks that threaten public health. As a global leader in international medical research related to infectious diseases, HJFMRI has supported research for antimicrobial resistance, influenza, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, febrile and vector tick borne illnesses, malaria, Ebola, enteric infections, Lassa fever, mpox, respiratory infections and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

Malta

Mater Dei Hospital is the only acute general teaching hospital in Malta that is run by the Ministry for Health & Active Ageing and covers a population of approximately 545,405. It offers a full range of hospital services as well as an extensive range of specialist services. The hospital aims to create a centre of excellence in the provision of effective and efficient patient-centred quality care, both in the acute and in the chronic setting, and to achieve high levels of patient and staff satisfaction while enhancing teaching, research and innovation. The hospital caters for all medical specialities including medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, cardiac services, ophthalmology, dentistry, paediatrics, neuroscience, obstetrics and gynaecology, oncology as well as infectious diseases, including HIV. Apart from inpatient services, the hospital also offers emergency services, day care services, outpatient services and diagnostic services. Mater Dei Hospital covers an area of over 250,000 square metres and includes 1,200 beds and 33 operating theatres. It is also an affiliated member to 24 European Reference Networks.

CSPI is a local NGO established in 2018 by the leadership of the Columbia University Global Health Research Center of Central Asia (GHRCCA). Diverse research projects in HIV prevention and treatment, harm reduction for key affected and marginalized groups (PLWH, people who inject drugs, sex workers, LGBTQ+ individual, migrants). Effective project delivery with a focus on implementation science and service-based programs. Close partnership with local NGOs, government agencies, and private-sector entities across Kazakhstan, other CA countries.

Greece

National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was officially founded on April 14th, 1837. It is the first founded University in South-Eastern European region. The idea of establishment emerged alongside with the Greek War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution. It is still the largest state institution of higher education in Greece, and among the largest universities in Europe. It offers specialized professions such as medicine, physical and social sciences, law and economics, archaeology, education as well as in theology. It is funded by the state and is constituted by a student body of about 68.500 undergraduate and postgraduate students and academic staff of over 2.100 members.

The Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (ENSP-NOVA), or National School of Public Health, is a specialised unit within NOVA University Lisbon, focusing on postgraduate education and research in public health. Located in Lisbon, ENSP-NOVA offers a range of master’s and doctoral programs designed to equip professionals with the skills needed to address contemporary health challenges. The school’s curriculum covers areas such as epidemiology, health policy, environmental and occupational health, and health economics. Notably, its Master’s in Public Health program is internationally recognised, ranking among the top 10 in Europe for health economics and public health. ENSP-NOVA is committed to advancing public health knowledge and practice through interdisciplinary research, policy development, and community engagement. ​The ENSP-NOVA team contributes to HIVE with a multidisciplinary team with vast expertise in health economics, implementation science, social sciences and qualitative research, and working with vulnerable populations.

LIETUVOS SVEIKATOS MOKSLU UNIVERSITETAS
Lithuania

The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) is the largest institution of higher education in biomedical sciences in Lithuania, integrating academic studies, scientific research, and clinical practice. With over 7,000 students across disciplines such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and public health, LSMU is a key player in national and international health education. The university maintains active partnerships in more than 80 countries and is committed to fostering global collaboration and innovation in health sciences.

As part of this project, the Infectious Diseases Clinic at LSMU contributes its academic, clinical, and research expertise. Located at Kaunas Clinical Hospital, the clinic includes two inpatient departments with 50 beds and an outpatient unit, treating around 1,800 inpatients and consulting over 10,000 outpatients annually. It serves as a teaching base for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including residents and PhD candidates, and regularly organizes continuing education for healthcare professionals. The clinic’s research focuses on neuroinfections and influenza, with results presented at international conferences and defended in doctoral dissertations. Its staff are active members of European and Nordic infectious disease networks, contributing to scientific advancement and public health preparedness.

The Hellenic Scientific Society for the Study of AIDS, Sexually Transmitted and Emerging Diseases was founded in 1988 as a not-for-profit organization, with main goals to contribute to the study of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted diseases, airborne diseases and COVID-19, dependencies and addictions, particularly in populations at high risk of transmission.
To achieve this goal, the following are mainly used as means:
1. Organizing seminars, conferences, lectures and other national or international events.
2. Undertaking, supporting and implementing research programmes.
3. Operating a research lab and biobank for its research.
4. Publishing information material related to its scientific work.
5. Cooperating with other national and international scientific Societies, NGOs, Authorities and organizations under public or private law.
6. Addressing public health information to the general public and competent Authorities via presentations, representations, interventions, suggestions and press releases.
7. Assisting in research activity of public Laboratories and Hospitals, by providing programmes, equipment and staff.
